KILLED BY THE ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF A SHOTGUN
Charley Doll Had Head Blown off While on a Hunting Trip Near Maricopa
Charley Doll, an employe of the Gate City Oil Company at Maricopa, and well
known in Bakersfield, was instantly killed about 4 o'clock Friday afternoon
near the Klipstein ranch in the hills above Maricopa, where he had been
hunting, by the accidental discharge of a shotgun from which he was trying to
extract the load. The charge of shot entered the head at close range, just back of
the right ear, and blew the entire top of the head off.
Mr. Doll, together with Henry Laub, had been out hunting all day, and were
on their way home when the accident occurred. Mr. Laub in trying to get a load
out of his gun found the charge stuck, and after some time spent in an
ineffectual effort to extract it, passed the weapon over to Mr. Doll for him to
try. It was then, in some way not clearly learned, that the gun was discharged,
with fatal results.
Coroner McGinn was notified yesterday evening of the accident and left this
morning for Maricopa, where an inquest will be held and the remains will be
brought to Bakersfield on this evening's train for interment.
Mr. Doll was a brother of Harry and Frank Doll, the latter a former member
of the Bakersfield police force, and whose family now reside on Truxtun avenue
in this city.
The deceased leaves a wife and two children.
Harry Doll, a brother, runs the Maricopa Hotel, though he is at present in
San Diego. Both he and a sister from Los Angeles will arrive in Bakersfield
this afternoon to be present at the last sad rites.
