Katherine,
I searched the CA death index. I did not find Ada, but I did find the following:

A L Barr (Spouse Initials: L J ) age 65 died 7-29-1918 Los Angeles county

It's close except for the first initial of the spouse. I could have been misread when transcribing to the index.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [CA-DEATH-INDEX] Anne Gaskins Viele & Ada Viele Barr - deaths in1915

This list was very helpful to me last week, and I'm hoping to have the same
luck again this time. Over the weekend, I found another one of my husband's
ancestral lines that had migrated to California in the early 1900's, during
their later years.

I tried to log into VitalSearch tonight as a guest, and I can't seem to get
past the log-in page, although I have a guest pass. It keeps getting hung up.

I am trying to find out more about the death date and place of Anne Gaskins
(my mother-in-law had the surname down as Gaskings). Her date of birth is
recorded in some old family information as 13 April 1835.

She married Sylvester Dennison Viele, son of Tjerck Viele and wife Elizabeth
Barnet, on 20 October 1853, in Rondout, New York. He was born in 1827, and
died in 1856.

The couple had two children: Ada Lavinia Viele (b. 1854) and Charles Gray
Viele (b. 1856).

The old family records (and, of course, this is all uncited as to source!)
show that Anne died in 1915 in California. I did an online search of census
records for both Anne, her husband, and her father-in-law today, and I'm
having trouble locating them. I found Charles in the 1910 census for Alexander
County, NC; and I found Ada Barr (wife of Pressly J. Barr) in the 1910 census
for Douglas County, Nebraska. But Anne Gaskins Viele was not living with
either one of them. I've looked for her in the neighborhoods, but I haven't
spotted her there either.

Ada Viele Barr is supposed to have died in 1915 in California as well.
Charles Gray Viele married Annie Josephine Bruner and died in 1928 in Alexander
County, NC.

I am guessing that Ada and her husband may have moved to California between
1910 and 1915, if the information about her death there in 1915 is true. I
was not able to find Anne Gaskins Viele in the 1910 census for California or
anywhere else, but I'm still looking. This family has been troublesome to
find in census records, partially due to the various spellings for the Viele
surname. Since Anne Gaskins Viele was widowed in 1856, I am wondering if she
married again and would be using another surname. That would certainly explain
why she wasn't living with either child in her later years.

If I can locate Ada Viele Barr in the CA death index, it may be possible to
track down her mother through the same records, or there may be information
in the obituary, etc.

Thank you very much for any help you can give me.

One curious question: Was there a disease working in the area in 1915? We
had a lot of deaths in NC in late 1918 from the influenza epidemic, but 1915
seems a little early for that. Does anyone know of any epidemic of some kind
in California around that time?
