Subject: [GOLDRUSH] MARTIN's in Placer or El Dorado Co's
Date: Sun, 26 Sep 1999 15:09:16 -0500

Hello,

New to the list here.

I am seeking information on MARTIN'S c.1850 in El Dorado Co (I think). One
source states they show listed in Placer Co in 1850, but my understanding is
that Placer Co was not created until 1851. Milton Martin (reportedly a miner
and a minister) disappeared from the Lumpkin Co GA 1850 census, leaving behind
wife and some of his children. He reportedly went to CA for the Goldrush
sometime before 1850. There is a Milton Martin in El Dorado Co on the 1850 CA
index, however, per tax records in 1865 he is still listed as the property owner
in GA and then in 1867 wife Cyntha is listed as the owner.

Can anyone tell me the route which Milton would have traveled from GA to CA
prior to 1850? Perhaps there is a record of this somewhere? Wagon trains etc?
Would also like to know what would be the best source for deaths in CA between
1850 and 1870?

The following Martin's supposedly went to CA along with Milton:

Van Buren Martin
E.H. Martin
Alex Martin
James Martin

Any information or leads appreciated.
