Hi Sharon,
I have had the same problem researching my Jordan ancestors who came to
San Francisco in 1860's. I also went to the S.F. City Directories which I
obtained from the my local LDS Family History Center on film. I also
contacted a researcher in California to obtain copies of obituaries. I had
first received a copy of my great-grandfather's death certificate and found
that he was buried in Colma, San Mateo County, California, which I obtained
a picture of his tombstone with my great-grandmother, who I did not have her
birth and death dates until then. Everyone who died in San Francisco, are
buried in San Mateo County, which you has a website for free look-ups. Hope
this helps. You will have brick walls in genealogy research when there is an
earthquake which destroyed records as happened in 1906. For me, there were
some family stories that helped in giving direction in my research.
Thanks, Pearl Johnson in Alaska
