Subject: [CA-NEVADACOGS] Doris Foley Library closure!
Date: Mon, 04 May 2009 19:54:33 -0700

There is a very real and immanent threat that the Doris Foley Library
will close down at the end of June before the 2009-2010 July Nevada
County Budget is adopted.
A group has been formed called the "Friends of Foley." We met for
the first time last Saturday and will meet again this Saturday at the
National Hotel in Nevada City at 3:00 PM. This core group has
brainstormed to come up with ideas and plans that we can take to
Nevada County Librarian MaryAnn Trygg if the Board of Supervisors
relents and gives the library enough money to stay open for a
reasonable number of hours each week. We hope to find enough
volunteers as in years past that we offer our time to volunteer at Foley.
What I am asking you to do is to contact ALL five of the BOS and ask
them not to close this very important research library. You can do
this quite easily by going to www.mynevadacounty.com and scan down
the page and on the left side menu you will see a link to elected
officials click on Board of Supervisors (3rd down.) Then you can
click on each Supervisor and send him an e-mail letter from that link.
You can compose the body of the message in your word processing
program and cut and paste it into the body of the e-mail.
By sending a letter e-mail it will reach them right away. Individual
letters are better than a petition or a form letter. It shows that
tax payers care about a particular issue.
It does not have to be long but in your own words let them know how
you feel if this library was closed and the collection not available
for researchers/genealogists or what it would mean to you not being
able to have the option of use this library.
Most of us voted for the 1/8 cent library tax gladly and if the Foley
library is closed it would not be getting any of our tax dollars!
Does our library and Board of Supervisors think so little of our
history branch and history that they can close this historic library
and still sleep at night? We have been down this road before.
The other thing we need to ask you to do if at all possible is to be
at the June 2 Board of Supervisors meeting where they will be voting
on the budget. It will be early on the agenda and as soon as we find
out what time it will be I will send another message to the list with
this information.
I realize that most of you do not have ancestors from this county
(some luckily do) but we hope that in the counties were our ancestors
came from groups like ours will stand up and support positions like
this and to help keep historic information open and available to the public.
Thank you. I know we are all busy with many tasks and events but this
should really only take less than 30 minutes to send all five BOS our concerns.
