Subject: [CA-RECORDS-L] How to search for a Calif. death when date not known
Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 08:44:20 -0700
If you think the date was sometime 1940 thru 1995, try the the URL below.
When you get to the page, fill what you know. Even one surname can be
searched for all those years, but I wouldn't suggest doing it that way,
without more info, for names like SMITH, WILLIAMS, BROWN, etc. Try various
spellings.
If not found, the date may have been outside California, or prior to 1940.
California deaths 1905 thru 1939 are in book form at some libraries,
including the California State Library, but librarians will not look these
up. You need do it yourself or get someone to do it for you. In the first
several years after the State law went into effect requiring counties to
send the information to the State, many counties were lax or inconsistent in
reporting. In which case, the death would only be recorded at county level,
but that means searching county by county.
Good luck,
