Mary; Thank you for your kind offer. My ancestors are: Paternal line:
Grandfather: Jose Soares Coelho from Santa Maria, Azores Islands, Portugal.
Immigrated to CA early 1900 prior to the 1906 earthquake in SF.
Grandmother: Maria Tavares do Rego (Coelho), also from Santa Maria, Azores
Islands, Portugal. They settled in San Luis Obispo, CA. I have the
information on my dad and his siblings and can research my paternal
grandparents thorough LDS. The line I have having a problem with is my
maternal line. GGrandfather: Manuel Jose Fraga, GGrandmother: Ana Emilia
Silva, both born on one of the Azores Islands. My problem is I have been
unable to find out which island. Grandfather: Antone Fraga born abt. 1917
in East Providence, RI (unable to locate birth certificate in either church
or civil records.)
Sam, do you have a copy of the 1920 federal census for Antone Fraga and
parents? This census should tell you the place of birth of each person
listed in the family unit as well as that person's mother and father. It
may just say Azores but may give you the exact island. It will also list
year immigrated and whether or not naturalized (another good double check on
naturalized status) After obtaining a copy of the 1920 census you will want
a copy of the 1930 census. It will also state the place of birth for the
individual and their parents. This gives you another opportunity to see if
they listed the exact island. The 1930 census also asks citizenship
questions - year immigrated and whether naturalized.
Other records that will frequently list place of birth are a death
certificate and obituary. Do you have both for the deceased ancestors? Do
you know where they are buried? Do you have the cemetery records? What is
inscribed on the tombstone?
Where were Manuel Jose and Ana Emilia married? If they were married in this
country you should b able to find a marriage application that should list
their place of birth.
Good Luck with your research
Pamela Dallas
Grandmother: Philomena Faria (Fraga) born Pedro Miguel,
Faial, Azores Islands, Portugal. (I have lots of information on this line).
If you have any ideas on how I might find my maternal ggrandparent's place
of birth I would be greatful. They were not naturalized according to the
records I have found. If you know of anyone else researching this line
please share my email address with them.
Thank you in advance for your time. Apologies to anyone on the list who
would prefer not to have this type of question on the list but; I thought
this was part of what it was for. Who knows someone may read it and have a
clue for me.
Regards, Sam
