The Monthly Meeting of the Southern California Genealogical Society affords
an excellent opportunity for you to rub elbows with experienced
genealogists, "show and tell" your hard-fought successes and get some fresh
ideas to help find those elusive ancestors.
Participate in the roundtable discussion, bring in your research treasures,
and get help solving those family mysteries. Open to the public.
Saturday, October 22, 2005 10am-2pm
One day, you will become an ancestor, and your descendants will be searching
for YOUR history. If you have ever felt frustration trying to find an
ancestor or prove an individual's relationship to you, then you understand
just how important it is to preserve your own information for future
generations. Rediscover traditional methods and new ways to preserve your
own life. Popular speakers Tom Underhill and Andy Pomeroy will conduct a
workshop to provide you with the tools to ensure your place in history.
Register for this special seminar at the SCGS website:

public. Space is limited, so register today.
Saturday, November 12, 2005 - 1pm
So much fascinating information is locked in that old family photograph,
document or story just waiting to be brought out! All that is needed is a
few new tools and some curiosity and creativity.
Genealogy and forensic science share the goal of solving a mystery. The
"who, what, when, where and why" are just as important to you in researching
your family tree as they are to a detective solving a crime. Yet
genealogists are just beginning to realize what they can accomplish using
forensic science tools to break down their brick walls.
Although conventional reference materials such as interviews with older
relatives, city directories and Family History Library microfilms will
always be important sources of information, they can now be supplemented
with information from the Internet and DNA analysis to provide a powerful
set of tools for the modern genealogist.
At 1pm on Saturday, November 12, SCGS will be hosting a talk by Dr. Colleen
Fitzpatrick, author of Forensic Genealogy. Dr. Fitzpatrick will speak on how
family researchers can apply simple forensic science techniques to
photograph analysis; how to really look at city directories, vital records
and hospital admissions with suggestions on unusual reference materials that
are not often considered; how DNA analysis not only can indicate if two
people are related, but also can place a family in an interesting historical
context.
Dr. Fitzpatrick will be available after the talk to answer questions and to
autograph copies of her book, which will be on sale after the meeting. For
more information on the book or on forensic genealogy itself, visit Dr.
Fitzpatrick's website at www.forensicgenealogy.info
In addition to the 1 PM presentation on Forensic Genealogy, there will be an
encore presentation at 3 PM by Mona Engvig of Creative Memories on
scrapbooking. Please plan to attend and learn how to create one-of-a-kind
books for your family pictures. Mona donates 10% of all proceeds from
supplies purchased at the event to SCGS. Open to the public.
