Hi. I have been researching a family whose patriarch and wife were from the
Azores. The problem is that the surname they ended up with is NOT a
portuguese name! Joseph C. MAGILL and wife, Rose E.(Vierra) MAGILL lived in
San Leandro, California. The only document I have been able to find on them
is the 1900 census for Eden Township. This is the information given there:
MAGILL, Joseph C.
born:4-1847 Azores
age:53
#yrs. married:27
yr. of immigration:1870
occupation:farmer
MAGILL, Rosie E.
born:3-1858 Azores
age:42
#yrs. married:27
year of immigration:1870
Listed with them their only child(and it get's a little more challenging with
his birthplace)
MAGILL, Lester C.(says Cayton on death cert.)
b.5-1874(death cert. says 5-1-1873) RHODE ISLAND(death record says Providence)
age:26
#of years married:5
MAGILL, Mary M.(wife of Lester said to have been adopted as a child-various
names given as maiden:MELLO, VON MARKS, MARKS).
b.9-1881 Sandwich Islands(Hawaii)
age:18(so she was apparently only 13 when married)
Lester and Mary's 3 children at the time are listed. They eventually had 11.
I inquired in a couple of places in Rhode Island to find Lester's birth cert.
but they could not find one. I have had people look in the pre-1940 death
indexes and they can't find Joseph or Rosie's death listed. I KNOW they were
in Alameda for the rest of their lives. I was hoping their death records
would reveal more about their names before they arrived here in the US. Can
anyone help??????
Thanks,
Margaret
