First it is the Berkeley Library that is closed right now, they closed their temporary library, on February 28, and will reopen back in the old now remodeled Main Branch on April 6, at 1 PM.
As how to check the catalog at U.C. try to site <http://www.cdlib.org/guides/melvyl/>; but I do not think that they would do a look up of a obit for you.
