Subject: [CAAlameda] Death Notice From Grizzly Bear of June 1907/Cooke, John
Date: Tue, 20 May 2003 21:09:03 -0700 (PDT)
Just so every one knows, these are the list, that I am sending all these messages to, plus to the county lists where the person lived and/or died. Also I looked at the first listed that they did in June of 1907, and these people were not members, but were pioneers, that they were honoring, on their death. If you would like to forward them, to other lists, either other places i.e. states, or to a name list, feel free to do that.

In doing a look-up I was checking the Oct 1909, Grizzly Bear, which was the Official organ of the Native Sons of the Golden West, and the Native Daughters of the Golden West, and each month they would listed pioneers who had died recently, so now starting with the first list, that they had in the June 1907, issue:
They also had for the first year or so, a small note or pome. For June it was:
**************************************************************************************
Pioneers of the Golden State--men of Nature's royal blood--men of dauntless courage and stainless honor--men never small in anything they did--men whose word was the equivalent of their bond-- men with whom fear was as unknown as dishonor was despised.
Of that grand army of men only a small handful are left. One by one they are slowly drifting down the tide of time into the shadow of the Valley of Death. Only a short space of time and the scenes they have enriched by their manhood will know them no more.
And one by one they cross the dark river that flows close by the foot of the hill of life, the living should honor them as departing men are worthy of being honored. -- Napa Journal

John Cooke, one of the oldest pioneers of Berkeley, passed away Tuesday, May 7th, at his residence, 2143 Addison street, at 3:30 o'clock. The cause of death is attributed to pneumonia. Mr. Cooke was born in Ireland, 70 years ago, and came to America at the age of 18, starting life in this country as a farmer.
