Josie Johnson
Josie Johnson Josie Johnson was born July 15, 1979, in Oakland, California. She died tragically in an accident while cycling up Big Cottonwood Canyon in Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 18, 2004. At the time of her death, Josie was a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Utah in biochemistry with an emphasis on heart disease. Josie grew up in Oakland and graduated from Skyline High School in June 1997, where she was valedictorian and lettered in swimming. She received her B.S. degree from Brigham Young University in nutrition and food science in June 2003. She served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France and Belgium July 2000 to March 2002. Josie loved life and tackled every challenge with enthusiasm. She enjoyed athletics and was an avid cyclist, runner, swimmer, hiker and backpacker. Josie leaves her father and mother, Richard and Betty Johnson, sister Julie Ritzman (Matt), and brothers, Ken (Jenifer) and Justin (Susan). She leaves nine n!
ieces and nephews, Cathryn, Ryan, Rachel and Andria (Ken/Jenifer); Kallan (Julie/Matt); and Colson, Kaia, Griffin and Lena (Justin/Susan); and uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends too numerous to mention here. Josie was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 24, 2004, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 4780 Lincoln Ave., Oakland. A viewing at 11:00 a.m. will precede the funeral. Contributions in memory of Josie Johnson may be made to the The Josie Johnson Memorial Fund, University of Utah, Development Office, 201 President Circle, Room 304, Salt Lake City, UT 84112 (checks payable to University of Utah).
