Just a comment on the message below. I also talked with Charlene Hard
Saturday evening regarding the unmarked graves. She was unhurried and
complete with an explaination of what was to happen.
On a visit to the cemetery a few years ago I was fortunate to meet her.
She is such a caring woman about the cemetery and those of us who have
ancestors buried there. She is helpful, dedicated and hard working. And,
yes, works with a very limited budget. Is there anything we can do to help
this? Possibly write County Supervisors?
My ancestors buried there are: SALZGEBER, REIDER, YAGER. Any information
on any of these names would be most appreciated.
Thank you!
Audrey
Jim,
I spoke to Charlene Hard, caretaker of the Ione Public Cemetery.
This is what's happening...This weekend is the "Ione Days" celebration.
Sunday,
the 7th, there will be a parade through town, at 10 am. This is an annual
event.
In regards to the Ione Public Cemetery...Charlene often has work crews form
Preston helping with the maintenance. One of the men involved with Preston
is a
"Clamper". This man found out that their are a lot of unmarked graves at the
cemetery. He, along with some other Clampers, generated interest/donations to
purchase materials to used to make "old" wooden markers to be placed on the
unmarked graves. These markers were made by the boys at Preston. Tomorrow
the
Clampers will be in the parade with the markers. The Clampers will then go to
the cemetery and present them to Charlene. They will then be placed on the
unmarked graves. Most will read "Unknown, rest in peace". However Charlene
does have a few identified. These markers will have the names on them.
Charlene works very hard to maintain the Ione Cemetery, she does an excellent
job. And she truly cares about all the people buried there. But her limited
budget has not allowed her to buy markers for the vast number of unmarked
graves. She is thrilled that someone has taken an interest in helping her get
these graves marked.
Charlene Hard, the Clampers, and the Boys at Preston deserve a huge thank you
for all their hard work!
Hope this answers your question.
Karen
(I have several ancestors buried in the Ione Cemetery, fortunately they've all
got permanent markers)
