John Marshall WOOSTER, crossed the plains to California with an ox team in
1849, and worked a placer claim near Volcano. Returning east in 1851, in
1852 he came again to California at the head of a mule train from Milwaukee,
in the same company with Captain Abner P. CLOUGH and his wife, Caroline F.
CLOUGH, whose daughter he later married. John settled on the bank of Sutter
Creek, in what is now Ione Valley in Amador County. Here he built a
saw-mill, a flour mill, and a machine blacksmith shop.
About 1856 John WOOSTER built a foundry at Altaville, a suburb or Angel's
Camp. The foundry is still there, with a record of continuous operation for
more than eighty years. It was at Altaville that Clarence M. WOOSTER was
born on December 17, 1858. Two brothers had preceded him: Fletcher Lewis
by four years, and Edwin Clough by two.
In the early sixties, John Wooster disposed of his interest, and moved to
Sonora, where he established another foundry, which burned down in 1867.
The family then moved to Fruitvale and he established a foundry at Oakland
Point. Here he made the machinery for the first river steamboat built on
the Pacific Coast. The family later moved to Oakland Point and the three
boys attended the Adeline school, which stood on a spot about where Adeline
Station now stands.
Following the discovery of a large area of mineralized quartz ore in the
Meadow Lake District, about ten miles northeast of Cisco, Meadow Lake City
became a boom town, and the Oakland foundry made several mills for this new
strike. Some difficulty arising over the payment for a ten-stamp mill, John
M. WOOSTER concluded to establish it in the Meadow Lake District to serve as
a custom mill. He selected a site, naming it Osoville. In one year, Meadow
Lake City had assembled a population of about 6,000. Osoville was about two
and a half miles west of this.
At Osoville, Clarence, then nine years old, worked at a riveting job, as a
lumberman, and also cooked and washed dishes. The family returned to
Oakland Point, but the father soon becoming ill, they went to live near Pine
Grove in Amador County with the mother's parents. There John WOOSTER died
on December 24, 1869.
The CLOUGHS had planted, with seeds brought from Milwaukee, fifteen acres of
orchard, one of the first commercial orchards planted in California.
