Hello list,
I am a new subscriber to this list, but a veteran of several other
wonderful rootsweb lists... Was just downloading and reading exerpts
from a diary written by my gg uncle..about his travels from upstate
New York in St. Lawrence County to the California Goldfields sometime
in the 1860's (I am guessing, as we haven't come across a date yet).
A distant cousin is struggling with the task of deciphering the poor
copy in hand..but.. in this first installment, the location "Rich
Gulch" is mentioned, and later he mentions the Calaveras River. I
have a US atlas, but the river doesn't show up....He mentions friends
from home, evidently mining at Rich Gulch.."the two Hamlins" and
"McKee". Evidently the four of them left this locale and returned to
an "Old locality" on the Calaveras River.
I would like to pinpoint the location of Rich Gulch and perhaps be
pointed to any resources for mining histories of this particular
area..to further educate myself.
Thanks in advance for any assistance locating the river and the
gulch!
