You have possibly solved not one but two family mysteries. In addition to not knowing Nancy's maiden name, I have been puzzled by my family's Cherokee connection. Mary Helen and her children, James R., Earl B. (my grandfather) and Della Stephens all appear on the Guion Miller Roll (1909) as "Eastern Cherokees Residing West of the Mississippi River." It appears that Nancy is the connection.
I belong to the Calaveras County Historical Society. Did you mean Milton Stephens instead of Milton Smith? I think I have a copy of Las Calaveras that has an article about Milton titled "Stephens Family Calaveras Pioneers" by George W. Hoeper.
I would like a copy of the material if it wouldn't be too much trouble.
