History of Fresno County- Elliott, 1882
page 225
JAMES W. MINTURN was raised in Bristol, Rhode Island, the year of his birth
being 1858, and spending his life, previous to coming to this country,
in New York and Bristol. He came overland to California by railroad, and
arrived in San Francisco in 1869 and engaged in clerking in the latter
city for a time. During that year he made his first visit to Fresno County,
but did not remain, and again visited it in 1872 and still again in 1878,
before making up his mind to remain.
Since January, 1882, much work has been accomplished on his place, such
as preparing the ground for irrigation, planting vines and trees, fencing
and erecting buildings, and he now was a fine place of 320 acres, 110 of
which is planted to vines and fruit trees. This district is well calculated
and adapted for curing and growing the raisin, also for claret, port, or
heavy wines and brandies. The grape-vines and fruit trees do not bear abundantly
until they are three years old, when the grapes in this section will produce
eight tons to the acre, the average yield.
Mr MINTURN has 1,000 apricot trees, and thinks this is one of the most
valuable fruits, as they bear at four years, and yield heavily, and the
fruit always commands a good price.
Mr MINTURN's vineyard is five miles from Madera, and twenty-two miles from
Fresno. It has the prospect of being one of the most successful vineyards
and orchards in Fresno.
