Lisa, you can verify land ownership, county deeds are public record. Maybe that might help you get a grip on exactly where his ranch was in Imperial Valley. Growers might have, ok, probably did, belong to grower associations. Some of these, like Sunkist for oranges, published little newsletters/magazines and would features large and small stories about members.

Them thar farmin' groups can be a gold mine. :)
