"A Dictionary of English Surnames" by P.H. Reaney, Oxford Univ. Press,
1995. This reference does not list the surname Axford, but it does list
a number of surnames beginning with ax including Axby, Axtell, Axon,
Axton, and a number of others. None have any connection with Oxford.
One possible source for these names is the Old Norse word "asktill"
meaning ash kettle which may refer to soap making. Another possible
source is the Old English proper name, "Acca" with "Axson" meaning "son
of Acca." A third possibility is a castle in Northamptonshire which is
now called Ashby but in the 13th century was called "Axeby" plus other
possibilities. I know this will confuse, but I hope it helps. Lew Howell
