Yes, I have her paternal ancestors back to 1683. Can you tell me
something of her descendents?
Lee Cagle
Okla City
Descendants of Peter Cagle
Generation No. 1
1. Peter5 Cagle (Jacob4, Christian Christopher3, Henry Sr2, Leonhart1
Kegel) was born May 1829 in Sevier Co., TN, and died August 1904 in
Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN. He married Elizabeth Henson Abt. 1846,
daughter of Thomas Henson and Nancy. She was born Abt. 1825 in DeKalb
Co., GA, and died 1896 in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., Tennessee.
Notes for Peter Cagle:
Peter was said to be 1/4 Cherokee Indian.
I was recently told by another descendant that Peter Cagle died in 1903
while living in Hamilton Co TN and was buried in the National Cemetery
here. The family was later requested to move his body to another cemetery
as he fought for the Union and not for the Confederate army. The body was
removed and taken to Memphis TN where he was buried in the National
Cemetery there. What I can't find are records supporting any of this.
1. I have not been able to find Peter on the Tennessee 1900 Soundex.
Another descendant who lives here said she could not find him in TN in
1900 either and thinks he might have been in GA for a brief time.
2. The National Cemetery here started as a burial site for the Union
soldiers who were killed or died during the Civil War. They have very
good records going back to ca 1862. There were five thousand unknown
Union soldiers buried here during the War, but not afterward.
3. The National Cemetery records up to ca 1940 or later or on microfilm
in the Chattanooga Public Library. I pulled this microfilm but did not
find Peter Cagle ever having been buried here.
4. The historian for the Chickamauga/Chattanooga National Park Service
was in the Library at the same time as I doing some research. I told him
what I had been told. He said the government would not have requested the
family to remove him for that reason. However, there would still have
been a burial record with a note attached of the removal if he had been
buried in the National Cemetery to began with.
5. He pulled records for both the Union and Confederate and did not find
a Peter Cagle enlisting for either. The Chattanooga descendant said she
believed that he was enlisted in some type of a home guard but never saw
any actual fighting. He was too old.
6. To double check the National Cemetery microfilm I telephoned the
office of the cemetery Tuesday. There is no burial record for a Peter
Cagle. They said the same thing as Jim Ogden, historian for the Park
Service.
7. William U. Cagle did live in Memphis, TN for a period of time. I just
don't know from when to when.
The same descendant who told me this also said that Elizabeth died in
1898."

county in which we live. Steve (my husband) and I have recorded every
burial site we can find in Dade County, so I couldn't wait to get home to
check it out. I couldn't understand why he lived in Chattanooga but was
buried here. His grave is unmarked but there is a marked graved for MARK

lived in Dade Co for a while anyway.
