I am having difficulty finding out much about the first husband of Lucy Cain.I have Lucy Ellen Cain married to Joseph C Cates in Durham County, NC10-26-1884. Some people say her middle name was not Ellen, it was Ann. But i have her death certificate here, and it says Ellen. Her mother was Mary Foster, and her Father father was Arch Cain, of Orange County, NC. I have found no reference to any Arch Cain who married a Mary Foster, but Living family members say that archibald Jr. was her father, and his father was Archibald Cain, and his mother was Parthenia Woods, of Orange County. I find Arch Jr married Luisa Gates, but no Mary Foster.Mary Foster was born about 1850 in NC. I am told that when Lucy Cain married Joseph, he died shortly after somewhere in Western North Carolina, and he is buried there. after his death, Lucy moved back home and ended up marrying his brother, David Samuel Cates ,In Durham, Nc 12-10-1893.. David was only known as Sam..He was first married to Rebecca!
Dollar. The parents of Joseph and David Sam Cates, were John Murphy Cates and Margaret E (Maggie) Rhew.. They had a total of 12 kids.
I would very much like to find out where Joseph Cates is Buried, and more about Lucy's mother Mary Foster.
Lucy and Joseph had two children. Mary Fadonia Cates (Fadonia) 8-3-1888 married James Walter Ray (Walter) in NC. he was born 1886 in Orange County.
and Sterling Cates who died in infancy or very very young.. Sterling may actually be John....
Lucy had several kids with David samuel Cates also.

John (John was born 1900, so he may be the Sterling that Lucy had from Joseph)...I am told that Lucy married David in 1891, but i found 1893 in Durham..
