My great-grandfather on my mother's side of the family was 1. James Henry Cain who was born in Douglas on the Isle of Man in 1866.

He came to Victoria in 1883 aboard the ship 'Iberia'. He was a journalist from 1885-1887, and entered the Methodist ministry in 1887. He married Angelina Tryphosa Bracewell, the daughter of a Primitive Methodist minister in 1889.

They had four children:
- Gladys Louisa Cain
- Mona Priscie Cain who died at one year of age
- Henry Bracewell Cain, my grandfather
- Douglas Samuel Cain. I am in contact with his grand-daughter.

His parents were 2. Henry Cain and Catherine Callow. Their children were:
- 1. James Henry Cain, my great-grandfather
- John William Caine, born before Nov.29, 1869 at Douglas
- Edward Caine born in 1872, Douglas

Catherine Callow died and Henry married Sarah Jane "Susan" Oates in 1876, and had three more children -
- Elizabeth 1879
- Walter born in 1880 and died in 1889
- Thomas H. born 1885.

Henry Cain was born in 1845, and there appears to be differences as to his parents - it appears most likely that his parents were James Cain and Elizabeth Killip. Another possibility is that of John Cain and Esther Cowin.

According to an amateur researcher, 3. James Cain was born before Sept. 14 in 1806 in Douglas. He was first married to Margaret Clague and had three children - Eleanor 1827, James 1831 and William 1836

He married Elizabeth Killip in 1843 and had three more children -
- 2. Henry born 1845
- John born in 1847
- Elizabeth born in about 1850.

The Parents of James Cain were 4. Thomas Cain, born 1779 and Elizabeth Kewley. Their children were:
- Emelia born 1803
- Thomas born 1804
- James Cain born 1806

I have numbered the names of the respective generations, and started with my great-grandfather as No. 1, and worked backwards from there. I do hope this makes sense to you. If any of these names are familiar, then there may be some point of connection. I don't know if James Henry Cain who came here in 1883, came with any relatives, to any relatives, or brought any other family here to Vic. James Henry Cain was a prominent Methodist minister at Wesley Church for about 25 years. He took great care of the poor in Melb., and supported a leper colony in Mokogai.

I have no other info. on Cain families, and have used microfische records to discover names of the children, great, great- grandparents on the Bracewell line. I was able to borrow these from a friend, but that does not apply at the moment.
