SYLVESTER, Ruby Lee. Parents, John Calvin and Sally (Carney) Martin. Born, Morganfield, Ky., May 3, 1904. Married, Sept. 1, 1923. Children: Norma Jeanne, Venita Lee. Educated, Elementary schools of Missouri and Bakersfield, Kern County Union High School. She has been active in Bakersfield Red Cross work over a period of years and has served in various capacities. She entered Woman's Club work in Bakersfield in 1926 and served as Program Chairman of the Bakersfield Womans' club 1930-31; as secretary, 1932-34; Finance Chairman, 1935-36; Vice President, 1936-37; President, 1937-38. She was Vice President of the Kern County Federation of Woman's Clubs, 1938-39 and that same year she was a member of the California State Nominating Committee, California Federation of Women's Clubs. She is President of the Kern County Federation of Woman's Club, 1939-41. During the time she was President of the Bakersfield Woman's Club, 1937-38, the work of the Christmas Basket Committee and the Ch!
ildren's Stocking work was begun, and the History of the Club was recompiled. She was active also in establishing the Kern County Art Section in 1937-38. In 1938 she served as Chairman of the Kern County Cancer Control Drive, having been secretary of the Cancer Control Drive in 1937. She is a member of the Bakersfield Infantile Paralysis Association and served as its first secretary, 1936. She was a member of the Executive Board of the Kern County Crippled Children Society, 1937-38-39. She has been a member of the Executive Board of the Bakersfield Community Chest since 1936. She was a member of the Bakersfield Co-ordinating Council Executive Board in 1935-37. Member: Bakersfield Chapter No. 125, O. E.
