ALPHORD HAYS

Alphord Hays died Wednesday, Aug. 31, 1994 at Ridgecrest Community Hospital. He was 88.
Born June 7, 1906 in Custer, S.D., he enlisted as a seaman in the Navy in 1923 and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a lieutenant commander. He served as the amphibious landing force advisor to Generals Patton and Eisenhower and commanded the amphibious force flotillas for General Patton during the Sicilian Invasion and the Normandy beachhead landings on June 6, 1945.
He worked for NOTS, China Lake from 1947-45 (sic) and for the State of California civil service in Modesto from 1955-77 before his retirement.
Mr. Hays received the Legion of Merit and the Navy Silver Star from the Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal and was awarded the Croix deGuerre with Silver Star from the French Provisional Forces commanded by Charles E. Degaulle.
Mr. Hays is survived by his wife of 63 years, Stella of Ridgecrest; daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Raymond Page; brothers in San Pedro and Richland, Ore., sister in Olympia, Wash., granddaughter and husband, Terry Kay and Richard Cox; great-grandchildren Cory, Jay and Cody Cox, and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 10 am at Desert Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are being made through Ridgecrest Mortuary.
