ROBERT E. ROCKWELL JR. 1929-2004
Robert E. Rockwell Jr. of Grants Pass, Ore. passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2004 after a lengthy battle with emphysema. He was 74.
Services were held in Grants Pass, Ore., Jan. 14.
Mr. Rockewell was born Dec. 18, 1929 in Miller, S.D. He lived in Custer, S.D. until 1941 when his family moved to Los Angeles. He attended University High School, graduating in 1947. He attended Los Angeles City College and Los Angeles State College earning a bachelor's of science degree in electronic engineering and graduating in January 1958.
He worked at NOTS during his college years, taking education leave to complete his classes. His career began at NOTS in January 1952 as an engineering aide and advanced to electronic technician in 1955 and finally to electronic engineer with the completion of his schooling. He became a supervisory electronic engineer in the 1960s.
In 1970 he was recognized by the Department of the Navy and by the commander of NWC for his contribution to the success of the UHF Telemetry Conference in Washington, D.C. He spent his entire career at China Lake until his retirement in May 1987. His title at retirement was Branch Head, Code 6233 (T-Pad), Supervisory Electronic Engineer DP-3.
After years of trying to grow strawberries in the desert, he moved to Grants Pass, Ore. in 1991 in pursuit of the perfect garden. His hobbies were photography, cooking, gardening, coin collecting and planning and building model railroads with his son Bobby.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert E. and Rozella M. Rockwell.
He is survived by his son Robert "Bobby" C. Rockwell of Grants Pass, Ore., daughter Sharon Rockwell-Dalton and husband Jeff of Dubuque, Iowa, four grandchildren Amber Rockwell of Grants Pass, Ore., Alison, Kelsey and John Dalton of Dubuque, Iowa, and on great-grandchild Makhi Vallee of Grants Pass, Ore.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you or someone you love to quit smoking.
