Tragic accident in Rain one mile From Mojave
A woman from Sparks, Nev., Mrs. Ester Mower and a Reseda, California man, Kenneth Eugene Lay, were killed in a head-on crash at. 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 18, 1963 about one and two tenths of a mile north of Mojave on Highway 6, and a passenger in Lays panel truck is in critical condition in the Tehachapi Valley Hospital, where he was taken by the Stickel Ambulance Service.
The accident occurred in the heavy rain and three vehicles were involved in the tragic crash, which according to the report of the California Highway Patrol officers of the Mojave Station, resulted when Mrs. Mower, 49, who was driving a 1957 hardtop 2-door sedan, passed two southbound vehicles in the rain. As she attempted to pull back into her lane of traffic, the car began sliding and went into a head-on sideswipe collision with the panel truck. Her car then continued on and hit another sedan driven by Philip D. Crestiri, 20, of California City.
Mrs. Mower was ejected by the impact and thrown at least 25 feet. Lay and his passenger, Edward A. Collins, 44, of Palos Verdes, California, were pinned in the truck for some time. Shelden Mower, 39, husband of the dead woman, was treated for injuries and released from the Tehachapi Hospital.
The victims were removed to the Stickel Mortuary in Mojave for final arrangements.
