George Hummel, Pioneer of Rosamond, dies
Mr. George Philip Hummel, 78, one of Southern Kern County's outstanding pioneers passed away on Dec. 10th in the Antelope Valley Hospital after a short illness..
He had been born in Los Angeles, California on Nov. 14, 1887 and came to the Rosamond area in 1939 as business manager of the Union Rescue Mission, which had acquired the townsite from Charles H. Stinson in 1916. Mr. Stinson had owned the townsite since 1904.
During his lifetime in Rosamond, he helped establish the first water system in 1935 and in 1939 he purchased the system and Mission lands. He sold the water system in 1951.
He was also instrumental in the building of the Wayside Chapel and was very active in church work.
Mr. Hummel helped establish the Rosamond Chamber of Commerce and served as a Director of the Antelope Valley Progress Association/ Board of Trade. He was presently the vice president of the Lancaster Camp, Gideon International.
For several years he had been semi-retired from his real estate business in which he had participated in the growth and development of the Rosamond area.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 13, 1965 at the Mumaw Chapel in Lancaster with the Rev. Norman C. Nelson, of the Wayside Chapel officiating. Burial was in the Joshua Memorial Park, Lancaster, Calif.
Survivors include his widow Della K. Hummel, and one son, Walter J. Hummel,. both of Rosamond and three brothers: Arch II., of La Crescenta, Dr. Edward J., of La Jolla, Calif. and Dr. Karl D., of Dallas, Texas.
