CLAIRE ELIZABETH PFISTER DOUGLASS 1923-2006
Claire Elizabeth Pfister Douglass, age 83, passed away Sunday Sept 24, 2006 at Ridgecrest Regional Hospital after a long battle with emphysema and congestive heart failure.
Claire was born July 29, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Penn. to Alice Mae Rock and Lloyd Howard Pfister. She was a graduate of South Hills High School in Pittsburgh. Her senior prom date was Elmer A. Douglass II. She and Elmer continued their courtship while he served in Patton's 3rd Army during World War II. After he was wounded and returned home in May 1945 they became formally engaged and in September 1945 were married.
Claire was a remarkable wife and mother who spent her early years as an oil and watercolor artist. When she lost her eyesight in the 1990's she turned to her second favorite pastime, reading, and became an avid consumer of "talking books" available through the Blind Library Services. Claire was a steadfast member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Reno, Nevada and a member of the Martha Circle.
She was predeceased by her husband as well as her son Elmer A. Douglass III, both of Reno, Nev. and her sister Alice Pfister Waddell of Pittsburgh.
Surviving Claire are her daughter and son-in-law Linda and Greg Roush of Ridgecrest, grandsons Ben Roush of Ridgecrest and Tom Roush of Reno, Nev., as well as many extended family members and friends in Pittsburg, Louisville, Ky. and Reno Nev. There will be a Memorial Service for Claire at Covenant on Saturday Oct 7, 2006 at 2 pm followed by a wake at the family home in Reno. Interment will be private at Mt. View Cemetery in Reno.
In lieu of flowers Claire asked that donations be mad (sic) either to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 6695 Mae Anne Avenue, Reno, NV 89523 or the National Federation for the Blind, 1800 Johnson Street, Baltimore MD 21230.
