Vern Rogers Shot Self Monday

Our little community was deeply shocked and grieved by the tragedy which occurred here Monday morning. Mr. Vernon C. Rogers who was Assistant General Superintendent of the Pacific Coast Borax Co. shot himself sometime between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. He was still alive when he was found, but he died at 12:22 p.m. from the effects of the wound.
He was sitting up in bed and the bullet entered his right temple and came out through the top of his head, lodging in the door casing. His housekeeper, Mrs. Jane Carriger, had been away spending the Christmas holidays with her children near Los Angeles.
For the past two days Mr. Rogers had declined all invitations from his friends and had .stayed in his home. However, they had not worried, realizing that the Christmas holidays were most difficult for him since the loss of his beloved wife, Sally in 1951. In the same year he lost his best friend, Pete Grim, and since that time he has intermittently had periods of despondency, but the tragedy came as a complete and shocking surprise to all who knew him.
Mr. Rogers had attended the Christmas party given by the Pacific Coast Borax Co. in their Los Angeles office last week. He had gone there with other executives and office personnel and had apparently enjoyed the festivities. Also last week he had attended many parties and dinners given at the homes of some of his friends here in Boron.
Mr. Rogers had for s6me time past, been suffering from a kidney ailment which was at times extremely painful. Whether this trouble caused him to take his own life, or whether he simply felt he could not go on alone will never be known.
Mr. Rogers was one of the best liked men in the entire community. He was respected and admired by all of the peop1e who work with him and especially by those who worked under his direct supervision. He was very efficient and was a kindly man who spoke ill of no one. His untimely passing leaves grief and sadness in the hearts of his countless friends.
