Dear Jacquelyn,
Could you tell us where you found your Caldwell lineage. There is a lot of Caldwell information scattered in bits and then recollected on the internet and it all becomes confusing. There obviously was a large Caldwell
group that immigrated from Ireland to Pennsylvania.
In 1727 Caldwells immigrated to America with a large family group. The group consisted of John & Margaret (Dudgeon) Caldwell, their five children, their two brother-in-laws and their families :Moore Richey and Mr. Dudgeon
and Margaret's sisters family, the Daughertys. . They landed at New Castle Delaware on Dec 10, 1727. John Caldwell was the leader of the group and settled them in Chestnut Level, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is found
in Drumore Township in the southern portion of the county near the Susquehanna River.
About 1734, the large family moved to Lunenberg Virginia. They formed a settlement on Cub Creek known as Caldwell Settlement
This history I found in the Logan county Ky Library in two documents. One entitled Family History, Caldwell and the second Caldwell. Footes Sketches of Virginia 2nd Series.
my family goes on from John and Margaret Philips
2. David Caldwell and Mary dudgeon wed c1744 in Lunenberg VA
3. David Varner Caldwell and Phoebe Mann wed c1780 they moved to KY
4. David Caldwell and Catherine Davidson wed 1807 in Livingston County KY
5. Zerelda Caldwell and John Ray we 1835 in Caldwell County KY.
Years ago I was tracking Zerelda and John Ray in Missouri and found in a book Pioneer Families of Missouri the following
Robert Caldwell of Scotland, wed in south Wales, settled in PA. his son
Robert Caldwell Jr. wed Mary Stephenson moved to Bourbon Ct, KY and had 7 children: james, Robert, William, John, Alexander, Thomas and Betsey.
Thomas wed Eleanor Boyd, settled in Callaway County, Missouri in 1826 and had a pottery works, Pottersville
I had tracked the Boyds for a while, and found two John Boyds arriving in Pennsylvania from Ireland.
John Boyd arrived in PA before 1744 and wed Sarah de Vane a Huguenot. they lived in Lancaster county
John Boyd #2 arrived in PA before 1767, married Mary Fulton and proceeded to have at least 4 sons who became ministers.
From A Family History Boyd by John Wright Boyd
To conclude, there are a lot of people with similar names all in PA at the same time, and many in Lancaster County.
Were they related?
Do we track them all back to John Caldwell and Mary Holmes?
Lloyd
