While walking through the Evergreen Cemetery near
downtown Los Angeles yesterday, a monument caught my
attention.

The first was a large granite marker, about the size
of a large SUV. On top of it was a stone lion. In
big block letters it said "PACIFIC COAST SHOWMEN'S
ASSOCIATION-1920". Around the marker were about 25
grave markers. All of them were men, and all of them
had the exact same size and design of tombstone. Then
my curiosity was REALLY aroused when I saw a smaller
marker about 10 years away. This monument said
"LADIES AXILLARY PACIFIC COAST SHOWMEN'S ASSOCIATION".
You guessed it...all the graves were of women, and all
were identical. I think they were the wives of the
men a few feet away.

So, I have spent many hours since yesterday trying to
find out just what the heck the PACIFIC COAST
SHOWMEN'S ASSOCIATION was. An Internet search today
leads me to think it may be an association of people
who work in circuses. Is this possible?

Can any of you extremely sharp and knowledgeable
people shed any light on this?
