RITA JOHNSON : OBITUARY - ( LA Times, Wed. Nov. 3, 1965) Rosary Tonight
for Ex-Actress Rita Johnson
Rosary for Rita Johnson, a top film actress in the 1940s, will be recited
at 8 p.m. tonight in Cunningham & O'Connor's Hollywood mortuary. Requiem
mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday in St. Ambrose Church. Burial
will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Miss Johnson, 52, died Sunday night in
General Hospital, possible from a brain hemorrhage. Autopsy tests are incomplete.Head
Injury in '48 In 1948 when she was at the height of her career, Miss Johnson
suffered a near-fatal head injury when a hair drier collapsed on
her head. She never regained her position in Hollywood, appearing in only
two more films, "Second Face" and "Susan Slept Here." Before the accident
she had been in 20 movies starting in 1937. Among them were "My Friend
Flicka,"
"The Major and the Minor," "Innocent Affair" and "Edison the Man."
Recently she had been living at 1210 N. Orange Grove Ave. West Hollywood,
with her mother, Mrs. Lillian E. Johnson. Miss Johnson also leaves a brother,
William J. Johnson, Jr., of Prospect Heights, ILL.
