I am indebted to Gary Radcliffe for contacting me
off-list and bringing my attention to the fact that the
plural of Los Nietos that I had used earlier, Los
Nietoses, is hard to pronounce. Upon receipt of his
plaint, I did some research and found that I had erred
altogether. The plural of Los Nietos is properly Los
Nietosos (pronounced Lohs Nee-YAY-toes-ohs, which rhymes
with Spanish bears), which should be much easier on the
tongue.
The two Los Nietosos will, of course, most likely
be expressed either in the diminutive or the superlative
by different genealogy researchers because they tend to
be excitable (and if you doubt this, just suggest that
genealogy ought not be free in their presence).
Those who are baffled by L.A. certificates and who
most often appear under the DCT logo in their posts
hale primarily from the Pueblo of L.A. and its annexed
pueblitas and don't care chilis about our subject. These
might refer to it as just Los Nietositos.
But experience teaches that those who are baffled
by L.A. geography on this list generally trace from Los
Nietosados, who were their great grandparents, and so
themselves are Los Nietoseros, whether they will admit
it or not, which they usually won't, and these list
members ought refer to the area of their family natividad
as Los Nietosisimos.
Yes, inflected languages are very complex. But
so are genealogists, most of whom will tell you they
are actually descended from aliens in UFOs from outer
space, unlike other citizens. Take my great-grandfather
Benjamin, for example. After a whole year devoted to
just him, I have now proved conclusively that he had
no parents, nor was he born. This is why genealogists
are called The Lost Generation. Any one of them who
has tried to figure out either of the Los Nietosos will
tell you that he or she is truly lost. That's why we
have lists like CALOSANG-L -- to try to assure the
researching public that, no they're not crazy, they
really ARE lost.
