THE SAFE CRACKERS.
Ex-Night Watchman Caines and Webb Held to Answer
Thomas E. Caines and Ed Webb, the two men caught in the act of burglarizing the
grocery store of Turner and Lamburn, on Aliso street about two weeks since and
which was fully reported in the Tribune the same morning as a representative of
this paper was enabled to visit the scene of the operation with the detectives
after the men were arrested. The prisoners were represented by Messrs.
Williams, Crawford, Peyton and McGregor.
Chief of Police Cuddy told how he took the detectives and placed them in a
position to make the capture at the right time. He said that he had
information the store would be entered early that morning. That he made
arrangements with Marsh, whom he knew to be upright and honest to enter the
building with Caines and Webb, who had previously asked Marsh to join them in
their safe cracking expedition. The Chief went on to tell how the men pried
open the door and gave no account of the resistance offered by the burglars
when called upon to throw up their hands. The chief explained the reason he
fired over Marsh's head was that he wished to give the other men an idea that
Marsh was not acting as his detective in the matter.
Detectives Auble, McKenzie and Donahue told how they waited in hiding, and gave
an account of how they forced open the door and what followed when they told
them they were under arrest. The defendants were held to answer in the
Superior Court with bail fixed at $2500. A lady, accompanied by a little
child, was present in the courtroom and listened intently to every word. It
was the wife and child of Webb. After the trial was over she fainted. The
prisoners were again taken to jail in default of the necessary bail.
