You may not know it, but a lot of cities renumber their houses to establish conformity with other communities. While there is no 2909 Russel in Whittier, there is a Russell St in that town which I found on Yahoo maps. My guess is that your grandads's house is there. Contact the city of Whittier library and they can possibly help.
