Subject: Definition of SPAM
Date: Thu, 24 Jul 1997 20:34:58 +0000
Hello again all,
When I posted for the vote this morning, I guess I assumed that
everyone was familiar with the definition of SPAM. Well, I guessed
wrong... :) For those of you fortunate enough not to know SPAM, let
me introduce you...
SPAM is unwanted, unrequested, unsolicited email. It usually comes
in the form of an advertisement. These online "advertisers" have
been known to shut down a server due to overwhelming email sent
through to various mailing lists. That, in fact, is what shut down
our previous server at MAISER.
At this point, 8:32pm CST, we have a majority wanting the list
closed. So, if there are any out there who object to this, please
speak up. While I personally do not enjoy SPAM, I don't like the
idea of having to close ourselves off from outside posters in order
to avoid it. However, I also know that SPAM causes problems for some
of your email servers and want to take that into account. If there
are not a lot of objections by midnight, I will "close" the lists at
that point...
