Surname: Petolon, Jefferson

I am trying to find out about a possible relative who appears in the Indian
Census of the Madera County in 1900. The name is "Petolon" and appears
in brackets after John Jefferson. I do not understand what names in brackets
mean. Is this his wife, is this an adopted name?
