First I would like to say THANKS to Ken Doig for transcribing the Native
American Census records for Madera Co, CA. This week I located the website
with California Births and Deaths and was able for the first time to find
my husband's birth mother's birth record (Effie Mary Estes) which showed
that she was born in Madera Co, CA. This information was unknown to us.
We had been told the wrong county. This record also gave her mother's maiden
name as SHERMAN. We think that her mother's name was Louise. When I checked
both the CA birth and death records for Louise (Sherman) Estes I found
that she was born in Tulare Co, CA on Jul 24, 1912 and died in San Diego,
CA 12-30-1962. We had also been told that Effie was half blood indian.
By checking the 1910 Indian Census for Madera Co, I have found several
Sherman families, but since Louise was not born until 1912 she would not
be there anyway. The records showed Louise's mother's maiden name as Risher
(Rischer), but I have not found any. I also checked the 1928 Madera Co
list of Indians and did not find Louise, but I do not know when she married
Arlis Estes, except the their first child, Effie was born 3-15-1930. The
rest of their children were born in Fresno Co.
Are there any other census records or records from the North Fork Rancheria
that are available on the net or an address to write to? I have sent an
email concerning birth records for Effie, but have to wait for a response
after the holiday.
Thanks again for making this scarse information available on the website.
