Margaret-------a wonderful and interesting resource is the San Quentin prison
record. You can obtain them trough the California State Archives.
http://www.ss.ca.gov/archives/archives_e.htm#family
PRISON RECORDS 1850-1945. Includes San Quentin and Folsom prison registers, inmate
photographs, commitment papers, inmate case files (samples only) and pardon files.
Prison registers have name indexes, 1850-1930.

You might be very surprised at the amount of information that is contained in their
files...........

Email the archives with the dates and names and they will search and get back to
you. They are wonderful to deal with...............

Best,
Carolyn
