I just had and e-mail from my cousin Alan in Fermaugh Ireland, he asked me
what this corned beef thing we Americans had . He is an M.D. and had never
had such until a visit to New York and Boston in the 1980's. He thought it
must an English thing. He also thinks the English started the parties the
American have on St Patrick Feast Day to further discredit the Irish as
drunks and no accounts. Now being an educated man and having travelled to
America he knows that truth that the real thing about the parties, St
Patricks Day, Cinco De Mayo, July Fourth and a few more is not where the
custom alledgedly comes from but that it came to America, where the freedom
to shout and celebrate and make a fool of ones self is as basic as the
Freedom of Speech, Religion and all the other Rights Freedoms and
Responsibilities that go along with being an American. In years past if 2
or more Irishmen gathered they stood to be arrested or shot even in Belfast
today that could happen, whether the victims be green or orange or just a
visitor asking directions at the wrong place or time.
He reminded me that no matter the holiday, the national origin or the food
that makes the feast, Every Day God Bless America, all of us and each of us.
