They were probably mostly wooden, but stone and cast iron horse troughs
date to
the late 1800s (and probably much earlier). The "Californian
Historian" mentions
the dedication of a an 1878 stone horse trough by the Native Sons of
the Golden
West in 2003

and the "Humboldt Chronicle" [TN] has a picture of an iron one from the
late 1800s
(http://www.humboldtchronicle.com/archives_page/2003/june/news3_06-18-
03.html).
However, since there are so many trees in CA, I suspect that most of
them were
probably made out of wood.
