Regarding the horses that pulled stages or freight from Raymond to Wawona, for example, in the time period of 1886 to 1900 or so, I have a few questions. The stages or wagons were pulled by anywhere from two to ten horses.

What breed of horses did they use? My cousin in the midwest guesses they used an averaged size horse similar to today's quarter horse but they didn't have quarter horses then. He said they would not have been the big-footed farm horses.

I asked whether they could team horses with mules and he said yes.

I think I read in an interview of one of the Summit House daughters that eight years was the life of a horse in those days.
