Hi,
I sent this message a few days ago, when our membership was about one third
the size it is now. Nobody responded that they knew anything about the
marriage records from the church in Surprise Valley. Do any of our new
members know anything about them.

Hi,

I have a bad habit of creating work for myself even though I have more work
than I need. But, here is something that has been bugging me for several
years. This information came from an old copy of the Journal that is
published by the Modoc County Historical Society.

" It should be noted that a very valuable, almost parallel record of
*church* marriages in Surprise Valley exists, extending from January, 1872,
through October 15, 1939. This record includes, in many cases, the ages,
occupation, birthplaces, and residences of the marrying couples. There are
similar records for baptisms. These records have been preserved in a volume
that reposes in the Pacific School of Religion Library Archives, Berkeley,
California. the records contained in this volume should be invaluable to
genealogists, demographers, and historians. Perhaps some future editor of
the Modoc County Historical Society Journal will be able to include the
information from the Surprise Valley Church Records in a future issue."

Along with this information was a listing of marriages that was apparently
transcribed from books at the Modoc County Courthouse.

I have always wanted to go to Berkeley and look at this book, but have never
been able to get over there. However, I understand that someone has a copy
of these records. It may even be one of our list members. If there are not
that many pages involved, perhaps we could all transcribe a portion of this
record and put the information in a database. It could even be put on the
Modoc County GenWeb page. I don't know how to set up the database, but I
understand that it is not difficult if you have the proper program. The San
Mateo County Genealogy Society has been transcribing indexes of various
kinds for several years and we currently have about 15 different ones
completed. The work is a lot easier when it is split up among many hands.

Does anyone know where the copy of this record is located? Does anyone know
how to set up a database? I believe our society uses something called a
comma delimited system. It makes transcription extremely easy and fast.
Would anyone be interested in helping to transcribe some of this information?
Or has it all been done already and I have not heard about it yet?

Thank you for your help.

Ken T.
