Dropsy: build up of fluid in the feet, lower legs and lungs. Generally
associated with the weakened heart muscles of congestive heart failure,
which slows blood circulation. However it was also caused by diseased or
damaged liver and kidneys. Often a lingering condition, death was
usually
caused by pneuminia from lung congestion.
As for senile changes, I think it probably is like dementia, like
Alzheimer's disease. A progressive loss of memory and intellectual
functions so that the mind gradually ceases to function normally and the
affected person slowly becomes increasingly confused, incapable of
sensible conversation, unaware of his or her surroundings, and generally
incapacitated.
Lockjaw is tetanus. You remember how we all are supposed to have our
tetanus shots especially when we step on a rusty nail and stuff? It is a
serious and often fatal disease. It is caused by a bacteria that lives
in the soil called clostridia. It invades the human body through
contamination of any wound that comes in contact with soil containing
the bacterium. A toxin, or poison, produced by the bacteria attacks the
nerve cells in the spinal cord that control muscle activity. After an
incubation period that could be as short as 2 days or as long as 2 weeks
or more, your muscles become rigid and subject to painful spasms.
