Looking Back is a regular feature of the Modoc County Record, a weekly newspaper published in Alturas, California. The following is transcribed from the February 15, 2001 edition.

THE TOWN'S people hurried to the fire in the Minard house, just west of town and helped in saving about 90 percent of the contents of the house. L.G. McDowell, who saw it first from the top of Carlos street hill, ran toward the house giving the alarm as he ran....Six Modoc boys can go to the 1925 Citizens Military Training camps.

55 Years Ago - 1946
MR. AND MRS. Rager of Alturas are happy this week since the radio brought news that Elton B. Taylor, son of Mrs. Rager, had been liberated by the Russians from a German prison camp. Lt. Taylor, who had been missing in action since last fall, is reported safe behind the Russian lines.

50 Years Ago - 1951
THOSE OF YOU who are under the impression that Modoc County is isolated, that it is even overlooked on road maps, may suffer a change of mind should you read the March edition of Sunset magazine, describing the Three Flags Highway with a brief description of Modoc County....Fossils that were found last week by Dan Davis and Hal Davis, local Forest Service employees, are believed to be the complete cheek tooth series from the lower jaw of Equus, a genus of horse, similar to those found in the La Brea tar pits of Los Angeles.

40 Years Ago - 1961
DURING THE Olympic Games at Squaw Valley, Rev. J. Hood Shavely, a minister at the Alturas Federated Community Church in 1946, will be in charge of Protestant worship....A new boat club aimed to accommodate more than 300 Modoc boat owners held its first meeting....High schools in Modoc County are now including American Cancer Society informational material about the association between heavy cigarette smoking and cancer of the lung in their classes....A one pound tin of coffee is selling for 65 cents.
