Looking Back is a regular feature of the Modoc County
Record, a weekly newspaper, published in Alturas,
California. The following is transcribed from the
October 23, 2003 issue.

Looking Back

194 Years Ago - 1890(sic)I calculate 107 years ago.
rsm
George Turner bought George Flournoy's cattle--250
head--paying $15 a head with 80 calves thrown in. This
is the best bargain for the buyer, we have heard of in
the country....Mrs. Pratt, had Jerry Marsh arrested
the latter part of last week on Halloween for knocking
on her door and scaring her bearly(sic) to death. The
boys(sic) was discharged, therre(sic) being no
evidence of malicious mischief....George Reynolds went
as our reporter to the Susanville Fair. But he got so
busy taking in all the sights he did't give time to
report anything. He says only that it was first class
fair.

89 Years Ago - 1914
A TRAIN of cattle cars was wrecked near the southern
end of Goose Lake Valley Sunday. Three cars went off
the track and 95 head were crippled, 13 killed.
Another wreck occurred near the XL bridge Monday,
delaying passenger cars to Lakeview most of the
day....O.C. McManus took a carload of Goose Lake
applies(sic) to Los Angeles to show what can be
produced in Modoc County....More and more farmers are
posting land to keep hunters off their property. Many
animals have been killed or mained(sic) this year, and
though we can't blame the property owner, it will soon
be that there is no place for hunters who mind the
rules to hunt.

69 Years Ago - 1934
THE BUCK KILL is way up in California this year and
Modoc County is leading the state. Tag returns show
1,398.

Sure were a lot of typos in this weeks Looking Back. I
suppose that typesetting and later, linotype, was not
the best way to have a correct issue. It is still hot
here in the Sacramento Valley. Supposed to really cool
off about Thursday, however, those reports have been
frequent but no cool down. No bod in the news that I
knew, so I cannot give any report on that angle. Hope
to see you all again next week.
