In response to a query by Jessie (Thompson) Loper posted in the Camp
Family Newsletter, June 1999, I did an Internet search for Chignall +
Essex + England and found a site concerned with aerial archeology in
Essex. I contacted the person who posted that site (Davy Strachan) and
received the response included below.
The Aerial Archeology site is at
<http://rs6000.univie.ac.at/AARG/worldwide/essex/essex.html>. Davy
mentions the Essex Record Office. Their web site is
<www.essexcc.gov.uk/heritage/records/mainpage.htm>.
I have asked Davy to send me his book list, but I have not carried this
search further. If someone wants to actually locate the church, I'm sure
that you can obtain this information from the Essex Record Office.

Hi,
Good to hear from you. You have got through to the right place! I work
for the Heritage Conservation Group of Essex County Council (responsible
for recording and protecting ancient monuments in the county. We mantain
a record of infromation about sites and monuments in the county and have
produced a number of books and bookliets about various aspects of the
counties past. We have just recently published a report on the
excvataions of the Roman villa at Chignall St. James, and we will have
more general information also. If you'd like send me a postal address I
will send you a booklist and order form. I also recommend that you
contact the Public Record Office in Essex as they are very active in the
area of family history research do a search fro "Essex Record Office" (if
you don't have any luck, let me know and I'll send you the www address).
Best wishes,
Davy Strachan.

I stumbled upon your beautiful and informative site while searching to
see
if I could find anything about Chignall St. James, Essex. I'm a
descendant
of Thomas Campe, Jr., who was christened there about 1630, and I
subscribe
to a Camp Family Association newsletter here in the U. S. One of the
other
members of the association entered a query, "Need address of church in
England being repaired. Camp's from there." If I can find the answer to
his question, he (and others) will probably appreciate it.
It would be good hearing from you.
Incidentally, I'm a Nelson, but have not been able to track my lineage
back
before James Franklin Nelson who said he was born in Virginia in 1805.
Surely I must be related to Admiral Nelson, or someone else who's famous!
Thanks for any help you may give.
