Dear Campbells:
I somehow missed the first post in this string (from Stephanie?). So I
don't exactly know the original question. But here's some info which may
be of general interest to the list.
Thomas Campbell (1763-1854), his wife Jane, son Alexander Campbell
(1788-1866), and other children emigrated from Antrim County, Ireland, to
Washington, Pennsylvania, in 1807-09. Alexander married Margaret Brown
(1791-1827), moved to Bethany, Virginia (now West Virginia), founded
Bethany College, and started the "Campellite" church which united with a
similar "movement" of Barton Stone and is today one the largest North
American protestant churches, officially called the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ) in the US and the Church of Christ (Disciples) in
Canada.
Still a small but thriving liberal arts collage, Bethany maintains both
"The Campbell Mansion" (which is visited daily by many Disciples and
other tourists) and "God's Little Acre" (the cemetery where Thomas,
Alexander, and many other Campbell family members and college faculty are
buried). I am sure that that the Bethany College library would have
extensive information about these Campbells, their personal lives, and
their voluminous writings, both theological and otherwise. So too would
the Disciples Historical Society in Nashville, Tennesseee.
I have discovered that one of the groups which were attracted by Thomas
and Alexander Campbell's teachings in the early 19th century were certain
"Scottish Baptists" in Nova Scotia and Ontario who had left Scotland,
individually and in at least one instance as group, in part for religious
reasons.
My own Campbell and other Scottish ancestors were Scottish Baptists who
immigrated in 1821 and 1831 and soon thereafter became "Campbellites" and
"Disciples" in Ontario and later in Manitoba. My grandfather George
Alexander Campbell (1869-1943) was named for Alexander Campbell, grew up
in Ontario, moved to Manitoba, attended Drake University (a Disciples
institution), and served as a Disciples minister in Des Moines (IA),
Hiawatha (KS), Chicago, Hannibal (MO), and St. Louis. At one time, he
was president of the International Convention of the entire Disciples
church. My family still has a summer cottage (named Argyle by my
grandparents) in Campbell Park (named for Alexander Campbell) in
Pentwater, Michigan.
I do not have any particular information about Thomas and Alexander
Campbell or their families. For that, please contact Bethany College
and/or the Disciples Historical Society.
But, if anybody on the list is interested in the Ontario or Manitoba
Campbells, the Disciples church in Canada, or Scottish Baptists in
general, I would be very interested in making contact and determining
how we might exchange information or cooperate in learning more than we
now know.
