Dear Cousin Gary,
The John Campbell entry of the October 11, 1850 U.S. Census Population
Schedule, Delaware Township, Ripley Co., IN, page 208, dwelling 136,
family 136, Call No. M432, Microcopy No. 169, National Archives,
Washington DC. reads starting on line 7 as follows;
136 136 John Campbell 61 M Stonemason $2500 Ireland
Sophronia 44 F Canada
James 20 M Farmer Ind 1
John 16 M " 1
Lucy 14 F " 1
The ones stand for having "attended school within the year." The
neighbors were families by the names of Love (from NY) and Remstedt
(Hanover). You Electa's marriage to Peter Bowers in January of 1848
explains why she is not listed.
Are your dates of death from the tombstones at Mud Pike Baptist Church?
Can you localize Mud Pike Baptist Church for me? Unfortunately, I have
not been to this site. The closest, I would have gotten is Greensburg,
where many of my relatives moved.
John Campbell may have been the John Campbell of 1820 Ripley Co., found
on page 079. This is doubtful as our John was not yet married. I have
not had the time to verify.
John may be the same John Campbell who purchased land on June 29, 1827
and is listed as an original land purchaser of Ripley Co., IN in Tract
Book 3, on page 39.I have not been able to verify.
The Indiana State Library Genealogy Division's Indiana Marriages Through
1850 at http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/tango/marriage/ listed John
Campbell to Semphronia Nevans in Ripley Co., 12-26-1825.This is probably
the marriage liscense date. The Ripley Co. website marriages of Toph and
County records list:
Campbell, John to Semphrenia Nevans 26 Dec. 1825
28 Dec. 1825
Campbell, John to Semphrony Nevans 28 Dec. 1825
Other marriages include:
Nev(e)ns, Chastine to Isaac LEVI June 1, 1836
Nev(i)ns, Mary to Wills G. Hickox Nov.24, 1831
Nev(i)ns, Philena to Matthias Yocam Mar.14, 1827
Nev(i)ns, Thilena to Matthias Yocam Mar.13 Lisc.
Bureau of Land Management Website has:
John Campbell of Ripley Co., IN purchased at Jeffersonville Land Office.
the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter of section 31 in Township
9 north, of Range 12 east including 17 & 84/100 acres dated October 8,
1834. Certificate no. 4465
Also:
John Campbell of Ripley Co., IN purchased the south half of the
northwest quarter of section 31, in township nine north of Range 12 east
containing 35 & 68/100 acres. The land was purchased on August 15, 1838.
Certificate No. 11547.
Thse two pieces of property would be located approximately 1.2 miles
west of present day Lookout, IN, approx. 1/2 mile east of Laughery
Creek, 1/2 mile south of Ripley Cr., and just south of State Rd.
48(which runs east-west between Lookout of Delaware Township, Ripley
Co., IN and Napoleon of Jackson Township). County roads 100E and 200E
would be in the vicinity.
I am the 5 greats grandson of John and Sophronia Campbell. Brad L.
