Subject: ISO Info on Campbell's at war
Date: Thu, 5 Nov 1998 07:58:21 EST
I am doing some research on a legend/rumor I heard about the Clan Campbell's
involvment in a clan war.
As the story goes, it started when a Campbell woman was raped by a member of a
neighboring clan. This upset the members of the Campbell clan, as well as the
clan of her fiance. So, her fiance leads troops of both his and the Cambell
clans, among others, into battle to defend her honor, with the lady of the clan
Campbell by his side ready to fight as well (It is my understanding that it
was not unaccustomed for women to fight in battle along side the men). Her
fiance was also one of the first to fall, and she is said to have thrown
herself upon her own weapon upon the death of her fiance (Another common
practice, I'm told). Thus, I'm told, started the longest and bloodest inter-
clan war in Scottish history.
Does anybody know if there is any truth to this story? The clan of the
Campbell womans fiance or attacker(s)? Any history of those clans? How about
the names of the woman, her fiance or her attacker(s)? A date of the battle?
What factual events may have made up this story? Any information anybody may
have I would greatly appreciate.
Thanks, Dave
